Description
ʻIʻiwi (pronounced "ee-EE-vee") was at one time one of the most common birds of the Hawaiian Islands. They love the fresh blossoms of the 'Ōhi'a lehua trees in the forest canopy.
Sadly these gorgeous birds are disappearing quickly due to habitat loss and but also in large part to an invasive mosquito that carries an avian malaria that the honeycreepers have no defense for.
The devoted workers and volunteers of Hakalau Forest National Wildlife Refuge on the Big Island have made great strides in bringing back the forest that had been decimated. This tropical rainforest on the windward side of Mauna Kea is making a major comeback to sustain these amazing forest birds. How to keep the mosquitos at bay is a whole other problem to solve.
